Apple Inks $1B Deal with Rival Google to Power Major Siri Overhaul

Apple is nearing a US$1 billion annual deal with Google to use a customized Gemini AI model for the next Siri update, marking a strategic shift toward collaboration as Apple aims to enhance its assistant while developing its own AI systems.

Apple commits a 1B dollar annual deal with Google

Apple is about to finish a significant strategic deal whereby it would provide access to a finely tuned version of Google’s advanced artificial intelligence to power the following generation of its voice assistant, Siri, in return for around US$1 billion annually.

Reports indicate Apple has examined many suppliers for the update, including offers from OpenAI and Anthropic, before choosing Google’s technology. Boasting around 1.2 trillion parameters, the deal is said to be a custom adaptation of Google’s ‘Gemini’ model, a significant leap compared with Apple’s current model architecture, which supposedly has around 150 billion parameters. Observers of the industry claim the move shows Apple’s need to catch up in the voice and AI-assistant area. Siri has trailed competitors in carrying out complicated tasks and managing multi-step inquiries; Apple hopes to correct this with this cooperation.

Although the agreement is still in the latter stages and plans could change, the updated Siri release is set for next spring. This configuration is especially intriguing since Apple is locking in strong outside technology but is still dedicated to creating its own in-house AI systems. Until Apple’s internal framework is ready, the Google model is described as a temporary solution. From Google’s point of view, like recently Google launched its first Google AI Earth Model, the transaction gives a high-value customer and supports the growth of its AI infrastructure. Although it does not necessarily mean greater integration of Google’s search capabilities into Apple’s operating systems. Some experts see the claimed amount, roughly a billion dollars per year, as a sensible investment.

For Apple, the main goal is to provide a more competent assistant across its ecosystem; for Google, it is to gain a major partner to deploy its model at scale. The return on the investment will depend mostly on how successfully Apple can integrate the model, handle privacy and performance concerns, and ultimately translate improved artificial intelligence capabilities into consumer value.
