Ford Announces $5 Billion Investment in Kentucky and Michigan for New Electric Pickup

Ford Universal EV Platform

Ford Motor Company has declared a sizable $5 billion investment meant to boost domestic electric vehicle (EV) production by means of a thorough restructuring of its manufacturing and battery supply chains. The project is driven by Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky and the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan. It looks forward to creating a mid-size, new, and affordable electric pickup truck with first deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.

Around $2 billion has been set aside in Kentucky to transform the 70-year-old Louisville facility into a state-of-the-art EV plant, thereby helping to preserve 2,200 hourly jobs. The remaining $3 billion will simultaneously be used to build a local battery manufacturing plant in Michigan to meet the lithium demands of the new truck.

Ford’s plan revolves around the release of its Universal EV Platform with the innovative assembly tree production technique. Allowing the simultaneous assembly of front, rear, and battery subcomponents, this modular technique optimizes activities by replacing the conventional linear assembly line. An increase in production by 15-40% is expected from this approach, with components reduced by almost 20%. Along with this, the project could also significantly shorten wiring harnesses.

Built on this platform, the new affordable electric pickup truck is expected to provide performance comparable to the Mustang EcoBoost while offering greater interior room than a Toyota RAV4. Set to debut at an estimated price of $30,000, an ambitious target inside the EV industry, it will include a traditional bed and a front trunk usually known as a ‘frunk.’

Ford’s management defines this change as its ‘next Model T moment,’ highlighting a major move toward popular, reasonably priced EVs made with improved efficiency and domestic investment. The firm hopes that this project will not only renew its new affordable electric pickup truck selection but also improve its competitive posture in a rapidly changing automotive environment.
