Gemini’s New Memory Feature Aims to Make It a Truly Personal Assistant

Google Gemini’s new memory feature

Google unveiled a capability called memories for its Gemini platform in February that lets it store data from past talks. Google has lately debuted a new chat tool called Personal Context. Gemini’s creative feature lets it progressively pick up your preferences and change its replies to fit. The senior director of the Gemini app, Michael Siliski, noted in a blog post, “The Gemini app can now reference your past chats to learn your preferences, delivering more personalized responses the more you use it.”

In terms of its operation, Gemini will recall your favorites and dislikes. For example, if you bring up a favorite comic book and then need help organizing a themed birthday party, it will take that into consideration and perhaps offer the comic book as a possible theme. Moreover, it will help to inspire ideas for themed cuisine and games for parties.

This improvement looks to be a forward move from the earlier recall characteristics. Users had to explicitly tell Gemini to go back to previous talks to get that information in the earlier version, which sometimes proved unreliable. Today, Gemini learns and changes independently without being specifically encouraged. The more you connect with it, the more it learns your preferences, therefore producing ever more customized replies.

This new feature puts Gemini ahead of its rival, Anthropic, which recently rolled out a comparable chat history tool for its Claude chatbot. Claude’s memory functions like the earlier Gemini model, hence it requires users to specifically seek references to prior conversations so that it may apply that knowledge in fresh ones.

Personal Context is starting its release today by Google, with full implementation expected in the following few weeks. Initially offered in Gemini 2.5 Pro in some nations, this function will eventually be expanded to Gemini 2.5 Flash and other areas in the near future.
