The End of Casual Live Streams: Instagram Implements 1K Follower Rule

According to the new rules, users of the social media platform, Instagram, must have a public account with at least 1,000 followers in order to use the Instagram Live feature on the platform. Instagram formerly allowed any user to broadcast live regardless of their follower number or whether their account was configured to be public or private.

For little creators on the site who don’t reach the 1,000 followers level, as well as for everyday users who love going live with friends for amusement, this new requirement poses a major difficulty. A fresh notice will show for those users without public profiles and fewer than 1,000 followers when they try to use Instagram live, stating that their Instagram account is no longer qualified for this feature.

The notice explains, “We modified the criteria for usage of this feature. Instagram live videos will only be available on public accounts with 1,000 followers or above.” Users have turned to social media to express their displeasure with this change, with some even calling for the decision to be undone.

This change brings Instagram’s live function more in line with that of TikTok, which also demands that consumers have at least 1,000 followers to be able to use live streaming. By contrast, YouTube demands that channels go live with only fifty subscribers. Though the firm didn’t explain the reasoning behind this change, it stated that the modification seeks to improve the general experience of Instagram Live consumption.

Limiting Instagram live access to users who have already built a following could help this change cut down on the number of poorer-quality streams. Moreover, it might be a cost-cutting strategy for Meta, given the high cost of hosting livestreams, Meta could have decided it is not worth the expense to sponsor lives that are joined by a small audience.
